Great start to the season by both Chiefs and Athletic

IMG_1513Barnstaple Chiefs hit the ground running for the start of the season with an emphatic 33-13 win at newly promoted Wimbledon. Starting out at 6:30 this morning and a 200 mile trip to South West London the boys got stuck in early on and by half-time were 19-10 up, they continued their dominance throughout and ended up deserved winners with five tries earning them the maximum five points from the first away fixture of the season. This is absolutely amazing considering it wasn’t until April fools day last season against London Irish Wild Geese that the Chiefs recorded their first away win at National 2 South and here we are the start the season first game away and not just a scrappy win but actually a dominating one.

After an early Wimbledon penalty The Chiefs didn’t hang about with Nat Bayet scoring the first of 3 first half tries on 20 minutes. The other two tries were scored by Will Topps and Winston James. The second half then became the JP show as Jordan Petherbridge collected a brace of tries converting both to seal a very strong win. JP ended the game with 16 points scoring 4 of the five conversions.

17-09-02-02 1Barnstaple Athletic began their campaign with a home fixture playing host to a depleted Paignton  seconds which was a shame as Paignton only turned up with 13 players and two thirds of the way into the game they were down another 5 players due to injury and fatigue. This meant that for at least 20 minutes Barnstaple were playing a joint Paignton and Barnstaple reserves team hence the 81-0 win isn’t that memorable. Whilst such an easy win in the circumstances is no way to judge a teams strengths and weaknesses new head coach Scott Warren would be heartened and to see how much enthusiasm his players played with, always available for offloads and showing good support for each other the team look like they wanted to be out there even before the start and when Paignton were near full strength. This does show good promise for the season although I’m certain Scott and the team will be relishing bigger challenges.
